Dmoz Submission

I already checked on the submission policies and instructions off their submission page on dmoz.org. I was specifically looking for information about submiting other websites that are not my own. I dont know the legal aspects of this, and it makes me question when I am able to put in the title and description of the site. Is this something I can do?

It is no problem to submit a site that isn't yours if it fits the topic and adds value to the directory.

People in the SEM biz submit client sites all the time, so yea, fire away. While the editors have the final say over wording of titles and descriptions, if they are sites you are affiliated with (clients for example) it might be worth checking with the respective owners to see if they have any particular wording in mind to suggest for the description.

It can be notoriously difficult to get a listing changed and most of the time updade requests don't tend to result in changes unless the listing is factually incorrect or contains gramatical errors. The title will virtually always ben the name of the website or company so there is not much flexibility there.

Nothing about ODP policy that says the public can't submit any site they wish to. And if there were a rule against this, how could ODP editors enforce it? No way of knowing if the person submitting is affiliated with the site or not. I would doubt doing this would be illegal anywhere.

Agree with what has been said, except that I don't think it was said strongly enough. Site suggestions were envisioned as a way the general public (i.e. the surfers) could bring good sites THEY knew about to our attention without making the commitment required to apply for editing themselves. People suggesting their own site, or submitting client sites, would have been considered a secondary source. (Remember, editors are spending 99+% of their time adding other people's sites! And that's the mindset that drives the project.)

But, to put it into ODP perspective, it's NOT illegal to submit your own site anyway. (Just don't abuse the privilege.) It's NOT illegal for a web developer to submit the sites he's just finished developing for his clients. And it's NOT illegal for a SERP perp to submit sites he's promoting. (So long as the sites otherwise meet the ODP guidelines.) And we're willing to wade through (and even list) a fair number of self-submitted sites, in order to find out about the good sites that surfers find for us.
