- A reorganization may lead to a change in a category's content charter. For instance, a category which used to hold all sites about widgets, might be later split into two separate ones, for widget theory and widget manufacturers. Or, editors might decide that sites for local outlets of company X will only be listed in the Regional branch, eliminating the subject heading. For still another example, a category which used to feature extensive deeplinks might have grown to the point where deeplinking is no longer in order, and the deeplinked listings will be purged.
- Robozilla, which is the ODP robot that flags non-functional sites, may have marked a large proportion of sites as invalid, leading the editor to remove them temporarily from public view. This happens, for example, when a local ISP is purchased by another one, as it usually takes some research to find out that all members.widgetcom.net need to be converted to members.comcast.net.
- Some categories are prone to "content drift"-- the site seems fine when first reviewed by an editor, but after it is added, it mysteriously sprouts a casino and a splay of p0rn affiliate banners. Or, there may have been a newbie or an abusive editor who listed sites which should have been. Soon enough those sites will be purged-- entire categories have been dissolved this way.
