Hi,

My site was listed in dmoz 3 days ago - but there's been no update for this in google serps i.e. it doesn't say this site has been listed in dmoz in such and such subdirectory.

When should I expect this info to update?

They are saying there's been another google "major update" recently - what impact can that have?

Please advise

I've been in dmoz for 5weeks now, and I'm not even showing in the dmoz cat listings, let alone google directory.

Expect to wait up to 6 months.

Sounds rather bloody optimistic :0:((
I suppose I will have lost my job long ago by then ;(

Hi Freshman, it is not as bad as killroy wants to believe you. First of all, the page on DMOZ with a link to your site has a PageRank, so your home page will benefit when the new backlinks/PR is calculated.

Then there is the extra lines in the SERPs. That seems to be more up-to-date than the Google Directory. Having those extra lines in the SERPs could somehow get you more traffic too.

Also other DMOZ-clones will use the new RDF-dump. So you will get more links as time goes by.

Eventually, the Google Directory will be updated one day. And since they haven't done it for some time you would say it will happen soon (just my guess, I could be wrong).

BTW, you wrote in another thread [webmasterworld.com] that your site is bilangual (English & Russian), that could mean that you can get listed for both languages.

Thanks, takagi

This is a different site.
The site I spoke about in that thread has been in tha state of "pending approval" for 2 months already.

Thanks for your encouragement!

Also other DMOZ-clones will use the new RDF-dump.

What are those?

Also perhaps you know based on what grounds google directory selects some dmoz listings and rejects others.

I believe the Google Directory accepts the entire set of ODP category pages. The problem is that the pages at Google Directory haven't been updated since about March.

What are those?

Anyone who wants to make a quick clone of the ODP. Some offer additional functions (like Google offering PageRank ordering).

Many take a copy and don't update it for years.

DMOZ in google directory is valid from about 1 month ago. Expect to wait about 3 months to be seen in the google directory - however to have the BENEFIT of the backlinks, expect faster results. Last time the PR rises and cat tags from DMOZ happened some time before the directory was updated.

Just like Google uses the data from ODP/DMOZ, so do many other sites. So basically Google is one of the DMOZ clones. To find them, see the link in the thread: How many clones of DMOZ are there? [webmasterworld.com]

Also perhaps you know based on what grounds google directory selects some dmoz listings and rejects others.
Usually they just list all the sites, albeit with a delay. Maybe in rare cases they apply a filter like if a site changes from non-adult to adult content, or if a domain no longer exists.

It seems the RDF-dump is now made on an almost weekly basis. But Google is free to use a new dump or not. If you look at message 5 of the thread Dmoz Update - New tags showing in Google [webmasterworld.com] you can see that in the SERPs the category for Microsoft was linked to a non-existing category in the Google Directory 2 months ago. Well, now it still is wrong! So that means that the categories shown in the SERP are fresher than the Google Directory.
