It is if it will generate more than $300 worth of revenue for you from the hits.

what in an ideal world are you expecting for your $300

1, Traffic from Yahoo
2, Increased Page Rank for google purposes.
3, Pleasure of being associated and listed in Yahoo, just like all your competitors.

Plenty of people disagree with me, but taking Shak's theme:

1, Traffic from Yahoo

From the directory? You'll be lucky!

2, Increased Page Rank for google purposes.

Most categories are low PR, and high number of entries. The odds are against you.

3, Pleasure of being associated and listed in Yahoo, just like all your competitors.

Expensive ego trip then....

I haven't sub'd to Yahoo in a long time, but to some degree it does depend on your sector and situation. For most scenarios though I would spend the money elsewhere.

$300 for a PR6 link, without any control of "anchor text"?

and how many other outbound clicks on the page?

And of course you are assuming they will actually stick it in that cat, as opposed to another...

It looks like there is more than 50 links in "my category".

Pleasure of being associated and listed in Yahoo

... and the sites that use directories to find linkworthy sites.

A link on a PR6 page with 50 other links ain't worth $300 a year. Particularly with no control over anchor text. Only reason for paying Yahoo is click through traffic.

Try submitting to one of the regional Y! directories that still offer the Standard Submit option.

Ok. So it looks like Yahoo will not work for me.
Most of the people here are webmasters. You all have access to your logs. Could everybody just list top 5 referrers, so I can see where most of your traffic is coming from.

Hey Nalavanje,

Sometimes it is worth submitting. There are many factors to consider:

1. What is your budget?
If you are on a tight budget, then you might want to wait to submit.

2. How many websites do you manage?
If you only manage one, then paying Yahoo for your 1 site is probably a worthwhile investment.

3. What category are you submitting to?
If the category doesn't have too many sites, you can get both PR and traffic from the category listing. Sometimes the category page will appear at the top of the Yahoo SERP's, other times the category will be listed in Google. So you might be able to get traffic direct from the category.

These factors might help you make your decision. Personally, I haven't submitted a site in a long long time. Google is not generating twice as much traffic as Yahoo, so if I don't have much money to promote a site, I always prefer paying for a link elsewhere.

Hi Nalavanje, I agree broadly with 2_much but I think it depends what your promotional stratagy is and what type of sites you build.

We only deal with ecommerce sites and tend to use just one site to cover the keywords ie: widget-store.com. For this approuch then I think a Y! listing is an essential part of the promotional stratagy and represents good value. If you prefer to split your products over a number of sites, red-widgets.com green-widgets.com etc, then the cost starts to out-weigh the benifits.

>Pleasure of being associated and listed in Yahoo, just like all your competitors

I think that from a marketing and an SE algo perspective it is very important to be associated with the leading sites in your field.

>... and the sites that use directories to find linkworthy sites

That too!

If I only had $300 to spend on promoting a site I would spend it all with Y!.

I'm listed in two Yahoo directories and it has been my most consistent supplier of traffic over the last few years.

My conversion rate is higher there as well.

Plus, being a small business it gives me some stature.

Yes, my competitors are there as well.

As for controlling the text, I'm working to modify it now but I am dependent on their editors.

I much prefer the $300/year fee to having Overtures hands in my pocket all the time.

Listing order is alphabetical, so I hope your domain starts with "A" not "Z"
