What reasons can lead to listing removal?

It is surprise to find my site no longer in the dmoz directory. It has been there since december 2002. I check on my log file and the last referral from dmoz.org is 4th August. So I assume my listing is removed around that time.

So, do DMOZ editors are doing some 'review' recently? Or are there any new specific listing requirements that are added recently? By the way, my site is clean and fit the dmoz requirement perfectly.

The only thing I did 2 months ago is request 'update listing'. The request is processed about 1 month ago. Then listing is diminished this month.

I am looking for ideas and solutions. Please advice.

Has your sites content changed in any way to make it unsuitabe for that specific category?

You migh want to try emailing the editor to get some direct answers. It's always best to aproach them politly. It may be that the editor has sent your site to a category that he/she feels would be more suitabe and it is currently in a que.

If you check out the charter at [webmasterworld.com...] , you'll find that this isn't an appropriate topic for discussion here.

I agree with jimnoble.

ODP documents make it clear that once listed, no site is guaranteed a permanent listing.

How do I know who is the editor and how do I contact him?

I have actually resubmit the site just now, usually if an URL is in the database, dmoz will reject the submission but my submission go on smoothly.

I don't miss the traffic from dmoz, but I do miss my description in my google SERPs. :)

(My Site is down in the last last weekend, could it be a problem)

I found my editor and the way of emailing him.

I have a search on his name and nick on google and found out that he owns 2 sites which are listed in the same category.

I have a chance to meet an editor and he check my site and told me it is removed as intended.

They are really doing some 'reviewing' recently and remove listings that no longer meet the minimum requirements. I believe it is done randomly.

If you are reading this because your site disappeared as well, you will need to build a better site (unique contents) and resubmit again later.

I was listed in domz under a particular category.

The category was organized alphabetically with each letter assigned to a different editor.

Let's say the name of my business was James Green.
I was originally listed under J for James.

The J editor decided I would be better if I was listed under G for Green.

So he removed me from the J category.
However since someone else was the editor for the G category he did not add me under G nor did he request to the G editor that I should be listed there.

Basically he said "I can't help you".

I wrote the senior editor and he cleared it up by listing me in a different category that he had editor rights to.

Long long time ago (few years back) I have an actress fan page, I didn't submit it and it is listed under an Adult category of the star!

Later I email the editor and he told me it is because I have a link to an adult site in my links page! But later he admit that my site should not be categoried as adult materials because Yahoo also link to adult sites but it is not threated as adult site.

So he remove my link, which I think is good, but for the PASS 2 years, I have no way to get into the DMOZ directory! So for that time being, I have already give up with DMOZ.

Maybe you should make a better site.

> Maybe you should make a better site.

If I told you the star site has at least 1000+ visitors a day and 20 new guestbooks entries (that can't add their URL, hehe) and over 30 GB bandwidth a month ... the site is evolve from a geocities site in 1998 to a giant site today in 2003 ...

What do you think? We should blame DMOZ instead of ourself when we have did our job. Just they don't know how to appreciate it. :)

Whats does traffic and visitors have to do with the quality of a site, particularly the listing of a celebrity site? Answer, nothing. You could easily get tons of traffic just by offering photos that are on dozens of other sites. A site without original content wouldn't and shouldn't be listed.

Just to clarify this, an adult site is one with any adult content on it, whether that is the site's own content or banners and links to adult sites.

I think it's highly unlikely that an ODP editor would take a decision on the listing of a site in the ODP according to what guidelines are or aren't used in the Yahoo directory.

Generally the Adult category includes sites whose dominant theme is either:

- To appeal to the prurient interest in sex without any serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value
- The depiction or description of nudity, including sexual or excretory activities or organs in a lascivious way
- The depiction or description of sexually explicit conduct in a lascivious way (e.g. for entertainment purposes)

Non-Adult sites that exist to drive traffic to Adult sites should be listed in Adult. Non-Adult sites that contain sexually explicit banner and sidebar ads should also be listed in Adult.

However, sites that do not exist to drive traffic to adult sites, but may include non-sexually explicit pointers to adult sites, may be listed outside the Adult category.

When ODP editors can't decide if an otherwise non-adult site containing adult links and banners should be listed in Adult or not, they are encouraged to ask themselves the question: "would this organization take the time and effort to make this web site available if they were not profiting off of the adult links and banners" -- if the answer is "no" then the site is a likely candidate for the Adult category.

Ok, that's a better explanation than mine. Thanks ettore! :)
