Message Too Old, No Replies

I owe DMOZ and all ODP editors an apology

I should have read the resource zone threads.

For a very long time I have tried to get into this directory.(DMOZ) The first time I submitted to it I thought the idea of a directory made by real people was so cool. After almost 2 years and several submissions, 4 emails to editors, and to emails to ODP staff later with not one reply or even an automated reply I got really fustrated. I thought my site was unique and filled, with great content, ect. I built it myself so I would be a little one-sided.

Well anyway I read about resource zone. I didn't understand it because there was no direct connection or link to resource-zone.com. A thread said if you go to a SE and type RESOURCE ZONE that there would be a good place to see and check status. An editor replied within one minute with my submission status.

I definately recomend all newbies trying this before posting about dmoz.

Good for you automotivetouchup!

Glad to hear some good news about DMOZ. Resource Zone is a great place for actual information about The ODP and submissions' status.

A future version of the ODP submission policies will probably have links to various forums about the ODP and web directories, Resource Zone and Webmaster World included.

Replacement documents are in the works but nothing has been finalised yet.

We've done our best to announce it at webmaster-type boards and via some newsletter writers. Google has visited, and it does very well for a search for "resource zone." It's not hard to find.

We can't link to it (or most any other offsite location) directly from here -- read the TOS of WebmasterWorld.

They should put a link to it on the url submission. That would be a good Idea. I don't think that I was the only web person to get fed up. Every ebook about seo for a beginner says to get listed in odp and yahoo. No one ever says any thing about resouce zone. Most beginners like myself would not begin to think where else to find alternatives. Most of the time there is no relation between dmoz and dmoz forum at least to a beginner. It took me well over a year to locate resource zone for dmoz listings.

That seems to say something about the quality of "every ebook about seo" ;) WebmasterWorld readers have known about it for quite some time.

Not that I disagree with your suggestion that a link in a suitable place for those unfortunates who attempt SEO without using WebmasterWorld would be a good idea.

Don't believe everything that you read. Most definitely you should submit. However, from what I have read of late getting into Yahoo is very difficult. As for the ODP, getting in can range from hours to years, and you don't know when in that range it will be. As such, you shouldn't worry more about getting solid links from other sites.

Another couple of points worth noting:

1) Resource Zone is not an official ODP public forum, just an altruistic effort by various editors to try and educate submitters as to how best and where best to submit their sites, as well as alleviating some of the concern about sites that take a long time to get reviewed. As it's not an official forum, until now it's not been publicised on dmoz.org itself. As mentioned above, that may change in the future.

2) Resource Zone works well in giving submitters timely and helpful responses mainly because the number of submitters asking questions is reasonably well matched to the number of editors choosing to spend time answering them. If the submission form directed every submitter to Resource Zone then the editors there would most likely get overwhelmed with status requests and not be able to answer any of them in a timely fashion.

Most of the time, what ODP editors would like would be for submitters to read and inwardly digest the guidelines, then submit their site successfully and forget about it, leaving the editors to do their job in listing it. Sometimes a thread at RZ causes a submitter to choose to change their submission in some way, but most of the time submitters just want to know that they're in the queue. Telling them doesn't actually affect their chances of being listed or how long it will take. As such, for the majority of enquiries, the Resource Zone forum is something of a luxury.

At the end of the day, it's in the interests of the submitter for editors to be mainly concentrating on editing, then visiting Resource Zone when they're having a break. We could tell every submitter their submission status once a month but we'd have no time to edit and no sites would get listed.
