DMOZ and Google

One of my web sites was recently dropped from the Open Directory for no apparent reason. It has been in the directory for well over a year, and now all of the sudden it is gone. I don't understand why it happened, but the weirdest thing about it is that the site is still in the Google Directory. Doesn't Google takes its directory results straight from DMOZ? If this is true, how can the listing be in Google but not DMOZ? Is it possible that Google just hasn't picked up the change from the Open Directory yet, or do all changes automatically update as soon as they change at DMOZ? If anyone knows something about this, I would really appreciate some help. Thanks in advance.

Hi Bob

The google directory gets the data from DMOZ at intervals - in fact there has just been one I think. Your site will probably stay in the Google directory until they get the next dump from DMOZ.

One of the few not ready for a Google directory update...the good news is you might make it back into DMOZ on a reinclude before G updates their direcotry.

You might want to read some of the DMOZ problem threads here regarding the different snapshots being shown during their upgrade; you might not have been dropped.

I should add that the fact that a site does not appear in the category where it used to be does not necessarily mean it has been removed from the ODP database.
  • it may have been sent for review to a more accurate category
  • it may have been flagged as down or otherwise unavailable and been moved to a non-public holding area
  • it may have been listed under another url which is declared the canonical one (say, changing instances of users.aol.com/~widgetking/ to hometown.aol.com/~widgetking/ )
  • it may have been "eaten" by a bug-- i.e. still in the database, but not displaying correctly
