Did dmoz go backwards?

I'm seeing weird new sites added

I monitor several DMOZ pages for new resources. Thursday and today I noticed several of the "new" resources added were in fact very old or in some cases no longer active. Once or twice I could see this happening, but there are some OLD listings on there. I'm starting to wonder if DMOZ restored from an outdated backup or something else.

Examples:

has added Northern Light to the bottom as a search option! Wubba?

This page:

[dmoz.org...]

Has a Northern Light specialty index as a new listing. (And as you probably remember, Northern Light's search -- specialty indexes and all -- went belly a while ago.)

Was there an odd index update? Is someone restoring from backup? Am I just out my mind? These and other questions..

It's a hiccup. They've reverted to a backup version for a time while a "snapshot" of the system is made. Anticipate additional problems on or about June 25 for approximately a week.

I've said it before and I will say it again: DMOZ needs to get its act together. They are certainly going backwards as far as I'm concerned.

Has it ever occured to you that perhaps this is occuring precisely because DMOZ is getting it's act together?

Exactly. DMOZ is in the process of adding more servers, new software etc. which should be fully complete in a few months. For the next week, there may be similar problems (like kctipton mentioned) and after that, things will begin to get better. A old backup is being used while a "snapshot" of the data is being made.

meaning that sites that were accepted in DMOZ by mid June will be there in the future as well?
Just being curios because it took me 6 month to get in and just one week after being listed, I see the old pages again.

Yes, the old backup is being shown temporarily.

The edit side works for editing, and changes are being added all the time. There is nothing broken; the current state of the system is all carefully planned as part of a bigger picture. The edit-side database is fully functional and carries on working as before.

The public side is a week old, and is "frozen". No changes are appearing there, and will not do so for another week or so. Meanwhile editors are still editing, and the edit side shows all the latest changes. This is a planned part of the upgrades and system changes.

Heck, Google reverted to 2 or 3 month old data, and have been messing about for over 2 months. Be thankful the ODP only rolled the public side back one week! The public side will get a catchup update when all the system changes are done, in a few weeks time or so.

Yeah! (getting on bandwagon...) Bad Google Bad! How can they possibly revert to old data? What sort of crummy fly-by-night operation do they think they are? I don't know why anyone would want to be listed in their database. Don't they have any money? They should just shut the whole thing down and sell their servers on ebay...

Well, the "problem" scheduled for June 25 has been put off, but apparently it still will be a weeklong affair whenever they get to it. Editors are supposed to get a 48-hour notice of the downtime, so one of us will probably share whenever that gets posted.
