Not much PR though, the home page is only a 5
Homepage is a 6 according to my toolbar (don't ya just love google at the moment!). I'm sure it genuinely is a 6 - it was prior to dominic etc.
The cat. that my listing is in is a PR5 with only 4 other sites in there - a worthwhile link especially for a new site starting out.

Gimpsy only accepts suggestions at a domain level, so it is quite tricky to submit a particular PAGE within a site. However, Gimpsy does not expect ALL the site to be interactive. For example, if a site sells widgets, there is no harm in providing extensive information about types of widgets, the origins of widgets etc. :)
If you suspect that the Gimpsy editor may not find the interactive aspect of the site - there is a field for free comments - you may use it for that purpose.

However, it's now back (?) at 6, which is comforting.

Those are the only ones that really matter in the "general directory" category--and even then, they're useful more for PageRank (and getting your site crawled by Google) than for the number of referrals they're likely to send your way.
Don't overlook sites in your topic area, which may be more valuable (both in terms of referrals and Google PageRank) than low-level categories of the general-purpose directories like Yahoo and DMOZ.
The really useful links are the ones that you don't go looking for. You're unlikely to get a link from the top reference, media, and corporate sites by asking, but--at least if you have a "content site"--you may discover from your server logs that highly desirable sites have linked to you.
Hotrate entries only result in a dynamic url (right click on the link and select properties) such as:
hotrate.com/navitem.asp?id=738&url=www.yourdomain.com
So, any PR isn't going to your site, its being reflected back inwards around the Hotrate site. Great PR building internally for Hotrate, but not for your site.
Waste of space. Only any good if you value the visitors of Hotrate who may manually click into your site.
As for Google PR benefits, there dont seem to be any for your own site.
Many directories do this, in order to track click-outs, they lead into thier own analysis scripts, then out to the sites, but can Google really pass on that PR value to you? I very much doubt it. I'd love to be corrected on this, it would make proper link building so much easier.

Evidently, all the PPC directories MUST do that, but then you don't register with them for a PR :)
To my knowledge, all the other smaller directories mentioned here (Gimpsy, joeant, goguides) use a simple, strightforward link.
This is quite easy to check - just visit the site :)
goguides - good link
hotrate - no good link
Gimpsy - good link
josh.nu - no good link
somuch.com - no good link
linkopedia.com - good link
sunsteam.com - no good link
uknetguide.co.uk - no good link
We need to check each directory our carefully, unless as mentioned we desire the click-outs from the directory itself.
They are currently converting the database and having a new Web site designed, and will be launched in August.
