DMOZ works

With all the complaints about DMOZ I thought it worth while relating my recent positive experience.

On Mon June 2nd I submitted a new site to DMOZ. Having read about problems with submission I submitted at 8 AM EDT, early by US standards but High Noon in Europe. First submission attempt failed, a couple of minutes later it went through.

Today, exactly one week later, I found a DMOZ referrer in my logs, went to check and found my site listed.

My site is in a category with no commercial sites, so the editor is obviously not stressed out by having to wade through vast amounts of spam. Under those conditions DMOZ seems to operate very well.

Ths fact that you were able to submit is a wonder to me. Have been trying for many months on different ISP's in different countries and I still cannot submit.

I am glad it is working for a few around the world though.

Glad to read it worked out for you Mohamed_E. Truth is that at the ODP the time for a site to get reviewed ranges from several hours to several years, and all points in between. Doesn't necessarily matter if the cat is commercial. Commercial cats in Regional commonly are not spammed.

And, to Visit Thailand. Try submitting around 0800 UTC, or a bit later. Many people have managed to submit a site around that time, so you probably aren't trying hard enough.

Having found that night time USA works in terms of getting the DMOZ software to accept submissions, I have not had any problem getting sites through that hurdle for some time.

Further, once submissions have been made, acceptance seems to be faster.

I have no idea whether this perceived speed of acceptance is

1. Luck

2. Brought about by a reduction in the total number of submissions to DMOZ, due to the problems may submitters have encountered

3. Merely imagined, submissions are at exactly the same level!

There have been some recent changes at DMOZ that have improved the response time of the server(s). For a period before these changes, it was very difficult for editors to do their work due to the slowness.

So this may account for some increase in the speed of acceptance of sites. The rest is probably just luck.

Myself as an editor I have found the hardware upgrades excellent, no more going to get a cup of tea/coffe while I wait from the dashboard to my category.

Also non editor side I can move around alot faster as well :)
