Is there a way to submit non-commercial content to Zeal? I had an editor confirm that community members are blocked from submitting/adding pages from this site to the directory. I asked her for any suggestions, but it's been awhile and I'm not sure if I'll receive a reply. Any suggestions?

Zeal are very strict when it comes to commercial aspects of sites. Even if you sell a tiny amount of advertising on a deeply buried page they won't have it.

So, unfortunately, there's nothing you can do - no matter how good the non-commercial pages of your site are. It's a very broad-brush approach.

You can't copy the content out and into another domain either without triggering googles duplicate content alarms.

It's a page with no commercial content on it, simply reference material related to the topic of the site. Oh well.

But no doubt linked to the commercial site, and that is considered a no-no by the Zealots (well, by Zeal policy).

If it was a completely self-standing site there would not be a problem.

Confusion reigns supreme when people have, for example, a link to amazon on their site and a Zealot allows it. So I guess it also depends from editor to editor.

I find that even the Zeal guidelines for what is or is not commercial are a little vague. For instance, is a site offering paid membership commercial or not. I would have my doubts but it got listed.

Like WebmasterWorld.com which is also listed :)

I have no problems with that...

I had always heard, perhaps incorrectly, that if you had a substantial part of your site that was non commercial it could be listed. I would assume it would depend somewhat on exactly how commercial the domain is. For instance a paid directory without any reference to the fact it's paid (probably obvious to a zealot however) might be able to slip in a sub directory offering a significant amount of content that was obviously for non paid listings. For instance a directory of keywords that also offers a subdirectory with most and best information about how to make your own keywords for free. Add some edu and org links, and not in a spam ridden field and it can happen.

Rules here prevent posting specifics. I am an XZ (Expert Zealot), and the only way I could comment is to know specifics. As Perplexed wrote, Zeal guidelines tend to be fuzzy. Also, it may depend a lot on how picky the reviewing Zealot is in borderline cases.

I only show one deeplink on this site listed. That was by a LS editor. I can't find the main URL listed, and the software has webmasterworld.com designated as a site that can't be added.

A LookSmart editor told me the site is considered commercial (it's listed in LookSmart) and is blocked. Zeal members can't submit/add pages from this site. I was just wondering if there was another way to submit one of the non-commercial pages for review.

Is this a paid Looksmart listing? Commercial sites have been known to be added unpaid into the database. If this is indeed a paid listing, I think the answer is no. Without knowing all the specifics hard to say more.

Why would that be rfgdxm1?

I have no idea georgeek. I'd say webmasterworld.com appears listable in Zeal, and is non-commercial.

With domains listed in Looksmart you can't submit individual pages via the normal Zeal submission thingee.

However steveb, it can be more complicated than that. webmasterworld.com doesn't have a paid Looksmart listing, yet the software currently lists it as blocked. Sometimes Looksmart does some odd things. And, in some cases a persuasive argument to Looksmart editors can get things changed. LS/Zeal isn't like the ODP, which has cut and dried rules, and that is that. Lots of things a fuzzy shades of gray over at Zeal/LS. The biggest tends to be what exactly is a commercial site, and if the site is a commercial one, which deeplinks are acceptable.

If Looksmart considers the site commercial then Looksmart considers the site commercial. Whether it has a commercial listing or not obviously doesn't matter. You can't submit via the form. You can beg LS editors on their message boards but that doesn't have anything to do with the submission form.
