Going through the regular submission to directories to build up the link pop/and web presence - and I just find it amazing how many directories just dont seem to work properly.
On my last crawl for directories to submit too, I would say that 50% of the submit forms did not work, another 10-20% of directories were not accepting submissions.. another 10-20% required that you set up an account to submit your url (No doubt so they can send you spam emails) and then there are the ones that you have to pay to get listed!
So I would say for every 10 directories viewed 1 or 2 I could submit too - and I probably wont get listed.
Ohh the fun of building up link popularity :)
I tend to agree with you.
however a number of directory staff that I have spoken to have given a similar reason, althought its NO excuse for not allowing submissions.
Many automated scripts have been doing the rounds, and basically spamming the living daylights out of these directories, leading ceratin management to block the submission systems.
obviously there are very sinple measures to counter this, but as we all know, common sense is not a common thing.
furthermore I have noticed many directory owners just dont give a damn anymore, their dreams of selling out to Yahoo are NO longer there, and their sites are just fading away with what little traffic they have.

Back in 2001, we spent more than 2K hours to build a decent Vortal and local directories database. Now, more than half of it has gone south and the database became too costly to update. We just nuke records from it every day. We dont update it anymore but for niche market finds and other market shifts.
On the other hand, some well implanted (or smarter) mid sized directories bellied up a bit on residual traffic for the same reason. So it's less forms to fill, for the same trafic.
There is always a bright side to discover! :)
