Hey thanks for the warm welcome!
>>Adding: it is not the *same* font, but I just think it is a little too close in "look and feel" making it not *special*
Its got some color in the letters but how can you make a connection from that? Personally I think it looks unique and I like it.
>>complete with a "Good tips from Google" link.
heehee guess they are trying to warn us about people like you. Just kidding. :)
The search engine is still a little bit hit and miss, but we are told that the people in the know are working on it
I think they are trying too hard. Who says we need all those results? The results seem irrelevant because the searches for my area don't have that many relevant sites in the directory. They list all these sites and at the top. Then they feel as though they have to add another 200 results which start with being irrelevant and get worse. If you search for New York weddings (not real search) I don't want ten thousand New York real estate agents.
The point I was making was not about this or that bit of spam in GoGuides, but the fact that is they claim to be "Spam Free" as their main slogan, then it is a claim that they cannot possibly live up to :(
However, the slogan was to accompany the link that went with it to explain its intent. See the [goguides.org...] page of the site. (Couldn't remember if urls are allowed on this board. Please remove if needed.)
I think Excell and ncsuk had the right spirit of the slogan in their statements.
Your point is taken,, it would be better to say, "we strive for a SPAM free directory" or some such.
I think it would be almost impossible to be totally SPAM free as sites change and things slip in etc. I know with a small regional directory I help with it is very, very hard work to keep on top of, that is why shooting off an e-mail to the spam people is always a great idea. Helping to keep the Internet a better place is a community effort.
and ncsuk
I think we should just strive for a spam free internet really.
The slogan is really a motto or goal. It is something that GoGuides.Org is striving for, not already obtained.

Alex, great job on the logo. You captured the unified variety of people focus well. kudos!
a. Look of the site
b. Content of the site
c. Broken links
Bacically there is more but im not going to go into it.
The main thing really is that as long as the site is clean, no spam, no dodgy redirect and no popups it gets my thumbs up and instantly get 2 or 3 stars.
Then its a matter of seeing if there is any reason to downgrade it.
Then I opened up two browsers to view them side by side and it isn't at ALL the Google font. For pete's sake, the small "g's" even point in the opposite directions. :) The only similarity I really see is that it's a serif font.
That said, I'm glad to see GoGuides moving forward. I've always appreciated the nature of DMOZ, but their recent problems have really damaged their ability to accomplish their purpose. Having alternate options like GoGuides, JoeAnt and the others is great for the industry. It gives webmasters more options and keeps the "big ones" on their toes. :)
Guess I should have phrased it that the Google directory is basically a clone of the DMOZ directory.
Not basically a clone...an actual clone. Google's directory is a direct feed from DMOZ.
Yes, anyone who managed to get a site listed in DMOZ last fall knows that when things break, it can take months (and months, and months) for the dump to get picked up and start showing in the Google directory. :)
They told me to "resubmit" to a category that was illogical and to a topic that doesn't exist.
I smell processed pork luncheon meat in the offing. Now I wish had had used a "throwaway" email address. Dumb, dumb [sound of hand smacking forehead]
Waste of time.
One day someone will write the definitive book on why editor abuse occurs.
I would hazard a guess the percentage abusing at GoGuides is no better, no worse, than the percentage abusing at DMOZ.
IMO a large chunk of the abusive ones just get a kick out of seeing their site up there in lights!
Posting url, but not sure if that is allowed. If it needs removed let me know.
