DMOZ editor or conflict?

Can you be editor of your own catagory

My whole catagory or branch in the DMOZ regional listing directories are all looking for a volunteer editor. I would be happy to volunteer to edit if that means I can list my own site as well. Don't get me wrong I'ld be happy to edit the catagory unbiasedly and completely, but would ODP accept me as an editor of my own prosepctive catagory?

Website ownership doesn't debar you from editing the category it could be listed in. Don't apply for a cat bigger than 50ish listings and be sure to declare all your affiliations. Your application will need to convince the meta who processes it that what you just said here is true.

Dunno about _you_ personally. But we do accept many people as editor of their prospective categories. In fact, it's rather hard to find web-savvy topical experts who HAVEN'T formed SOME connection with websites on that topic, even if they haven't created their own site.

Be up-front about your full connections: maybe you work for a website development firm in Podunk, New Jersey. Could you apply for that category and list your own firm's local clients? Sure! It could be a benefit to your firm and to the directory.

But: we expect you to be fair with the competition. Go out and find local websites developed by competitors, review submitted websites in a timely fashion, refrain from keyword-stuffing your clients and keyword-stiffing your competition, that sort of thing. And you can demonstrate that by submitting three non-affiliated sites on your editor application.

I am in a similar situation. I have a site, will have another site in 3-4 months but the category is so small that I cannot find 3 non-affiliated sites. Liked 2-3 but they all are already listed in related categories. :(

Do a Google search. It's hard to believe that for any category you couldn't find two new sites.

;). Ideally I think it should be scrapped (or modified drastically) but being a realist I realize that it won't happen soon and therefore, I should try to make it better.

It might be that you get rejected from the category you apply for - this happens sometimes, especially if it's a large category. If that happens, go for a smaller, related category or a hometown first.

Given the breadth of the readership of WebmasterWorld, I think, if I were you, then you might try signing up under a different handle.

They can be a touch over protective, some may say sensitive, at DMOZ, and may be reluctant to accept an editor with these views on the directory ;)

Given that an editor application is always rejected (if indeed it is rejected) without a reason. My guess would be that IITian, if his application was rejected, would always have a niggling doubt that he might have been accepted under a different name!

My personal experience: Couple of weeks ago, I got accepted as an editor of a category in which I wanted my my site to be listed. I clearly stated my affiliation and asked the meta to contact me if he/she had any questions.
I have already listed several of the competitors'
sites, as well as my own. I am just about ready to go looking for some new relevant sites for my category.
My application got approved within 24 hours (small category - 100 or so sites). I think if you are upfront about your affiliation, you shouldn't have any problems. And it goes without saying that you have to have integrity to accept/reject sites based on their quality only.

I applied to be an editor (in a catagory that holds one of my sites ) 24 hours ago and haven't heard anything back. I am not concerned about the time lapse, 24 hours is not long. What I am concerned about is that the application page, when submitted, did not take me to any kind of confirmation page so I am not sure that it actually went. Does anyone know if this is normal?

been a while since I applied, but I do know that pretty much immediately you should have received an auto generated confirmation email to which you must reply before the application is inserted in the application queue.
