When I first opened my site about three years ago I planned for it to be primarily about Tribble Health issues and submiited to that category in DMOZ and was listed there.
As my site has grown and changed the last couple of years I find that I do not have much info on Tribble Health at all but instead have more general information on tribbles. The largest section of my site is now Homeless Tribble Shelters but I also have Tribble Memorials, Tribble Fiction, Tribble Humor, etc., etc.
About a year ago I submitted a change request to DMOZ which was never acted upon. I am thinking of submitting another one but I fear losing my listing altogether because I recently added a shopping section to my site with affiliate links to tribble related products. There are no banners, no pop-ups, no in-your-face hard sell tactics. Just products that should be of interest to people who have tribbles mostly confined to the shopping section of the site.
Am I better served to just stay in the wrong category than to risk being dumped for affiliate links?
If you view the DMOZ listing as a source of referrals then you have a difficult balancing act, risk assessment or whatever you choose to call it!
I also find that I am miscategorized on every little podunk directory on the web that uses DMOZ data. I don't honestly know if that is hurting me or not since no one ever comes from any of these directories.
Also, having your site listed in the most appropriate category, and with an appropriate description of the site's content, will boost the theme relevancy of your site. If your site isn't focused anymore only on Tribble Health issues, you might get a description telling users that they will find there Homeless Tribble Shelters as well as Memorials, Fiction, and Humor.
It's not only a PR thingie.
