From your experience, what are the top 5 directories (paid or not) for commercial sites in terms of traffic?

Well on our site Google beats Yahoo in your list.

I have found the best places for traffic are directories related to your content. Ie if you have a dating site, there are a million and 1 dating directories out there. They will send you more traffic then these other directories..

Depending on content, keywords, country, etc...some directories will work better than others for you. Try the Dmoz list of directories and submit to all of them. Then examine your log files to see which works for you ;)

I got listed to DMOZ, I thought your only allowed to be listed in one category..?

Markusf, I suppose Cornwall means that you should have a look at the DMOZ categories where search directories are listed in order to see which directories could be of interest to you. You can then submit your site to these directories, not to the DMOZ categories where they are listed.

Don't stop at the top 5. Submit to all the legit directories.

That list is last updated 2000.
I think people are right on target here: special interest directories are great: PR + targeted traffic.
