the previous thread on Snap is here
I went to Snap to check things out. Although the little report they have still says, in one case for instance, two number 1 KWs and two number 5's, now a search on those KWs does not return my client's site at all. Same story with a second client who was also just promoted.
In fact, the whole results list has changed and it looks really spammed. Anyone know what's going on? We certainly miss the traffic. Its not much of a promotion.
I've seen it mentioned somewhere (here? SEF?) that any "popularity" is lost when you are moved up to the main directory, and that the listing must battle for position once again within its new grouping. As for the searches and the site missing, I wonder if there is a time lag before it is indexed again? I, too, searched for KWs on the earlier update and couldn't find my listings.
update:
OK, I just checked on the new batch. It seems I'm in there on the most basic searches, but not necessarily on all the KWs I filed when submitted. On some searches, the return DOES include a keyword, on others it does not... so there must be some editor intervention on that level. Editors are definitely at work here, btw, because my title and descriptions are being altered significantly, but -in general- they seem to be doing a C+/B- job.
(Hey! Who's going to complain about the 1st slot for "San Jose CA" and the 2nd for "Anaheim CA" ?? --not me, that's for sure! )
update 2:
The main directory has some of the keywords. In the above example of "San Jose CA", if I search on just "San Jose" and then click the pre-built related link "hotels in san jose california" I come up on page 4.
Also, I'm wondering if my pages that get in the main directory tend to pull up their bretheren, i.e., Snap users clicking on a 2nd or 3rd page because they've seen one of the other pages. It's got to come from a click-thru from Snap to be factored in their popularity quotient.
>Did you watch any of the convention coverage? Snap led into almost every commercial.
What convention? No, but I'm damn glad to hear they are building their brand. Like LookSmart, I think Snap has made some backroom deals early on that are going to pay out big dividends in the long run --and that TV-watching crowd fits my target demographic just about perfectly.
This is really getting to be a sweet deal, I'm thinking of applying for 'Most Favored Nation' status w/ Snap.
>Is there a way to get more than those 5 in the Live Directory? Does the spider pick up more pages/keywords automatically?

No, as far as I know, Snap doesn't index any pages other than those submitted.
>keywords
Yes, it indexes the title and the description -but I suggest keeping them short and targeted to encourage the editors to let it pass as submitted. Editors are involved in the process, and sometimes change what I've submitted, but I spent a lot of time paring the title and text down to the bare bones, and they've rarely made any substantial changes.
I'm sure results depend on what the topic is, but my clients seemed to have exhausted the pool of potential interest that Snap can offer them, for now at least.
For example, Let's save I have two pages that deal with :
1. North Carolina retail stores
2. South Carolina retail stores
Should I submit these two pages to NBCI.com using, of course, appropriate keywords? I look forward to your reply.
