How long after inclusion into ODP does it usually take before I can expect my site to be found by using the ODP search facility using my keywords? Similarly, how long before inclusion in Google Directory?

Hey Jonny,

The dmoz will need to update once your site has been listed with them for your site to be shown in the results. The last update took way way too long clocking in at around three or four months.

I am hoping they will now get back on track and update every 4 to 5 weeks but am unsure at this time.

As for google:

After google update occurs they then send out the googlebot and do a full crawl of the web searching for new sites and pages. This is when your site will see the benefit from being listed with the odp.

Hello Brian, I presume Google uses the RDF dump and not the data is collects when spidering the ODP pages. There was no RDF dump between September 2002 and February 2003, and as a result no update for Google Directory during that period. But the ODP pages were sometimes updated. Now the RDF dump should be made every week.

Usually the Google Directory is updated after the Google dance is over. You have to wait another month if Google uses an RDF dump that was made just before the new link in ODP was added. So I would say the waiting time is somewhere between 1 week and 1.5 months.

The Google Directory uses the most recent dmoz RDF dump. The Google web search uses its own data spidered from dmoz.org. The dmoz search function uses the most recent dmoz RDF dump but if you navigate to the category where you are listed, your site shows up there very shortly after being added even if it is not yet in the search results.

In the search on the ODP site, it takes up to a week after the site is added. Search runs on an index of the database created during the weekly RDF run, and thus a site may wait a week before being included.

The search is *not* designed for keyword searching, neither will it find a url in the form www.site.com - if you want to find if it is listed, try searching on the site.com form of the domain name.
