Difference between Google/Dmoz Directories

If google uses dmoz dump, why are they different?

I'm fairly new and this may have already been covered, but I noticed that when you compare a category in the Google directory to the same category in Dmoz, they are not identical.

There's a site that was entered in dmoz weeks before the last update and it's still not in Google. In fact, it was in dmoz long before a site that is now appearing in Google.

There are also sites that were removed from dmoz before the "dance" but they are still showing up in Google.

I'm just interested to know how it works.

Thanks for any thoughts. (In layman terms please :)

DMOZ are caught up with an enormous submissions backlog and are consequently having problems providing Google with their newer stuff.

Whilst DMOZ is one of the greatest directories out there, and completely free, they have a frustratingly slow turnaround time on submissions and have a massive shortage of editors.

Waiting for your site to turn up in DMOZ itself, let alone turn up in Google's directory, is like waiting for a 300-year-old severely disabled granny to cross the road.

The ODP makes a "RDF" dump of its directory once a week (nominally, YMMV, etc.)

Google (and AOL) copy that RDF about once a month (nominally) and "soon" publish it on their system.

So even if all goes perfectly well, it could be as much as 5 weeks (or as little as a few days) before data published at dmoz.org appears at directory.google.com.

Obviously, all does not always go perfectly well. And although all seems all right at the moment, everyone's interested in NEXT update, and problems with IT are NOT predictable.
