Is DMOZ down?

or am I the only one who can't load it?

Every attempt I make to get to DMOZ pops me into the generic Yahoo search I get when a domain doesn't exist.

Anyone know what's going on?

They only have so many (insert small animal here) to run their servers...and given that AOL / Time Warner seem to be having some $$$ problems (to say the least) could you blame them for not wanting to dish out the extra dough to pay for:

1) bandwidth
2) servers & 'puters
3) better & more programmers

For a project that doesn't earn them any $$$ in return...? I just don't see it happening.

Perhaps next time yuo try, it'll work. I have problems getting to their site a lot.

A meta (Hutcheson) gave this explanation in a recent thread. It can be "members only" there a the moment!

The ODP has recently (past few months) been facing sustained malicious automated DDOS attacks. It may be in the form of dozens of cooperative pagewhacking spiders with grotesquely antisocially voracious behavior, or it may just be simple malevolence. It may be gathering information to use spamming.

...........

But ... in the SHORT term: they've dedicated most of the main server's energy dedicated to editor-only connections. Which means everyone else (public surfers, public searchers, and most unfortunately, submitters) gets short shrift.

I'd recommend trying at different times of day. It's hard to recommend a specific time, though, because the problem is not human load -- it's automatic spam attacks.

>it's automatic spam attacks.

When I checked a few minutes ago, I got the "heavy load" message on one search, then it did the next one ok.

I am getting through fine from where I am (PSInet, mid-Atlantic US). There are some infrastructure changes going on, as well as (from what I hear) some DDOS attacks, but it's up-- though a little slow.

I don't know what's more amazing, the fact that it (DMOZ) seems OK at the moment here (NE NY) or that PSINet still exists in some form or another. :)
