Does anyone know where I can find some reasonably simple shareware software that will help me build a community/Web directory?
Looking to build a directory for a specific purpose/vertical area...anyone?

there are quite a few packages available, both freeware and shareware, but it depends on your host as to which will work on your server. If you let us know what technology you are using, PHP, Perl, ASP, whatever, then perhaps may be able to give you some ideas.

Regardles,, you might try [planet-source-code.com...] as they have free applications, of varying standard as they are all user submitted, available in most languages.

I really appreciate the support. I am new to news groups, and new to web design/marketing - but learning fast (umm yes you may ask where have I been). I am designing in frontpage 2002..
I have no idea how my webserver works - ie. what server software it is running, but I will find out...
Looks like I might have to do a lot more crawling (before I am able to walk)

Hi Milkman,

There are few I would recommend.

1) IndexU
2) In-Link
3) Links SQL

But before you decide which one you want you might want to consider your budget and requirement.

1) Cheap but might get complicated to handle if you have tons (few thousand +) listings. IndexU is very fast + easy to use + easy to install.

2) In-Link - Has much nicer interface and I will say, it is best of all three, when it comes to managing, adding, editing listings. And is not that expensive.

3) Links SQL is most expensive, but has its own benefit of static pages.

All directories listed above can handle huge number of listing without any problem (I think so).

Reading through one of the other threads, it talks about doing a "download" of a sub category of one of the large directories - and then altering the detail of the site. I have given this a go, on one of the smaller sub-categories to try it, and it works and is able to grab all the sub directories/lisitings below - pretty cool! I would then give it a complete makeover, and turn it into a vertical/industry directory that suits.
My question is, undoubtedly the code will still be traceable so does this contravene and copywrites - is it serious and should I not try this sort of thing?, or is it a great way to start a specific web directory?
