At the last update, 90% (all but 2) of the sites in my category lost 2 PR points ... not 1 but 2!
There is a broader category which the majority of my competitors are listed in. Is it possible to have my listing removed from the current category and resubmitted to the broader one?
Or is this instant death?
Unfortunately, a new (broader) category opened up after my site was submitted and the majority of my competition were smart enough to submit to that cat instead of mine.
They have a definite advantage as the Category has several dozen listings and my cat has only 9. Most of them should be in my category ... but what can I say. Neither cat has an editor.
If I ask someone higher up to move it, they will likely ignore the request. I know I would!
Is your site listed in the Google directory category?
What is the PR difference between the dmoz categories (the one your in, and the one with the greener grass)?
This amount of PR droppage, 2 points, is quite a lot, for one link. Could it possibly be attributable to other factors, as some people around here have mentioned a pr recalculation.
In my opinion, a cat with 9 folks in it would be way more preferable than a cat with dozens and dozens of others. You soak up more pr because you're sharing it with less people.
Looked at that way, a PR 3 cat with 9 sites would be preferable over a PR 4 with several dozen sites.
In the other category, all of the sites have been credited with the DMOZ link in their Google links. I have never understood?why?
I realize what you are saying about the difference in the PR from one category to another, but if we aren't being awarded anything for the link ... I still think I'd rather be in the other category.
Does anyone disagree with this thinking? If so, please explain where I am going wrong.
but if we aren't being awarded anything for the link ...
Most likely you and your fellow category mates are indeed being awarded something for the link... to the tune of PR1-3.
Google only displays inbound links with a PR of 4 or higher with the "link:" command. There is still PR being passed on for the lower PR sites, it's just doesn't show up in the backlink check.
Ask a friend on a PC to check the PR of that category page. If it's from 1-3, you've solved your mystery.
If it's PR0 or grey... the category may have taken on a penalty.
I'm not sure that a run of the mill cat can take a penalty.
Penalized ODP categories have been reported for many moons now martinibuster... even the ODP is seemingly not immune to "bad neighborhood" associations.

However the only reference I could find on that thread to a dmoz penalty was for web promotion.
I did a search on web promotion but all the results had a healthy PR. I checked the directory listing for SEO related cats, and they too were all a healthy 5.
Am I missing something?
Please sticky me with a penalized ("run of the mill") cat that suffered a penalty because I've never seen one.
There is no category without an editor. Editors of parent categories and several other editors (editalls etc.) can edit in categories which don't have their own editors listed.
If you are sure your competitors are in the wrong category by the standards of the ODP, why don't you ask an editor or in the Open Directory Public Forum? We editors like to have our listings well sorted. So it is not improbable that the category will really be looked into.
Martinibuster: Is your site listed in the Google directory category?
Yes and it has been for several years.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot.
So ... I am guessing that since nobody has suggested that I have the site removed and then resubmit it, that this is not a good idea?
