Yeah, I woud'nt worry about it. If your site is half-way decent they'll include it for free.

Yes I did the free submission too and I was accepted in a few days. I think it's not useful to pay for GoGuides.

A friend of mine submitted his site to GoGuides 2.5 weeks ago (10/27/02) and his site is not in as of today (11/13/02).

Maybe paying is becoming the way to go on this now.

With any human maintained directory it all depends on the category. Some cat's are swamped with submissions, some cats don't have editors so it falls to the next up - which means they have everything below them to cover and that can be quite a bit. It also depends on how active the editor is. It's the same in every directory. You could try emailing the editor for that cat (or above it) and politely inquire as to your submission. It's also a personal decision - if you really need that inclusion right now and the cat seems to be a large one - or popular one - you might want to opt for it, esp if the money isn't an issue. In most cases I probably wouldn't, right now, but I do have a few clients that prefer immediate results and don't mind paying for them.

Okay, that was a little harsh. But, the history of sites that were once created to be a 'public resource' going down the road of monetization is ugly. My first thought was, "there goes another one".

We get the reviews in our anthills randomly, just as it was in Go.com. You can do reviews when your are a level 2 ant. The more you review sites the more sites will appear in your anthill. So it doesn't matter in which topic you add a site. The only problem can be that a reviewer won't review the site because he/she doesn't know what to do with it. The site will be queued again, and will go to another reviewer.

ok, I stand corrected :D I'm not an 'ant' so I wasn't aware of your setup.. but maybe I will try and become one just so I can call my self an 'ant' and have 'anthills' LOL - too cute.. i could use a new secret decoder ring anyway.. in a rash of frustration i stompped on one and broke it ;) [seriously, sounds interesting - also a unique way make sure sites are not left hanging, but that's another topic]

but in general, editors are assigned by cat (generally they choose a topic that interestes them and that's where they edit). I see, now, how joeant breaks from that - but at risk of sterotyping directories my comments still stand.

popular cats will be swamped with submissions where as less popular cats will not - the work load is not even - thus the problems.. hmm something to think about..

Actually, Gimpsy (http://www.gimpsy.com) also doesn't use Editor / category division for newly suggested sites. Each Editor gets (or shares) some letters of the alphabet. The FIRST letter of the domain name determines who will see the site in his/her queue.

Not all directories were created equal ;-)

Nothing has changed at GoGuides. We still accept free submissions; we still review free submissions; and we still list free submissions. We offer Express Submit to those people who wish to have their site listed quickly. It’s that simple...

Both free submissions and paid submissions are held to the same standards with the only exception being that paid submissions are handled by staff and are reviewed within two days. This opens the door for webmasters needing rapid inclusion in the directory.

Regarding free submissions that haven’t been listed yet. Topics with active editors will review submissions quickly while topics that have no editor cause a backlog of pending submissions.

To help overcome this problem, Team Support has a special feature that lists all pending submissions in the order submitted. This list covers all submissions in every topic--listing the oldest submission first. Team Support works off this list everyday to ensure all sites are reviewed in as timely a manner possible. Also, our committee members have full access to the directory and are working in topics where there currently isn’t an assigned editor or the editor has become inactive.

Hope that helps to clear up any misunderstandings because in time all submissions are reviewed.
