Any problem with non-domain sites being accepted?

I see mostly domain sites in ODP, but I get spaces for 11 distinct sites with my ISP service, who I'll stay with permanently because they're incredibly good, not 1 day of problems ever. It's all ad-free, quick loading hosting with a name something like [sites.exampleisp.com...]

There's absolutely no problem with search engines, but is it a hindrance to being accepted by ODP for a site not to have a regular domain name?

As far as I know, a does not need a regular domain name...nothing I read in the add url contradicts that, but who knows if the editor that will look at the site will have a bias or not?

Such things are not against the guidelines. In fact, they are supposed to be allowed.

However, as with everything else at ODP, it depends upon the individual editor, their personal policy, their understanding of the guidelines, and their frame of mind.

I would suggest giving it a try, and if there is a problem, email the editor.

P.S. See your SM.

My site is [my.isp.net...] and I had no problem getting listed (about six months ago if that matters).

My family hosting company uses the format [ispservice.com...] and then have personal folders like /myname/topic/ under that. I listed one of 'em with ODP about three or four months ago using the full site address to my personal topic and had no problems getting listed.

Just make sure you put your listing under the proper (and most accurate) directory heading.

http://sites.exampleisp.com/mystuffhere/

Rather depends on two variables:

1. Content - If you treat them as separate domains, and use them for different things, and submit them to different areas, you might well not have a problem.

What happens when you go "up" to the next level (is it [exampleisp.com...] If you have access to that index, and use it, some editors might prefer to list that.

2. The Editor - On one extreme, some editors will only list domain.com (excepting geocities, netscape etc.,) at the other, there's a few die-hards who will list everything that's submitted (including [exampleisp.com...] ). And some of them are Metas, so they're untouchable ;)

It should be a matter of content; so long as you are not trying to submit the same site in duplicate, the submissions should be reviewed on merit. So long as you are not talking individual pages.

I happen to be an editor of a really minor DMOZ category I got recently, and I have read their guidelines in general. Definitely URL by the guidelines is totally irrelevant. Adn if a site had a paid domain name and then switched to free ISP space, so long as the site was the same the URL should just be changed by the editors. The very notion of URL being relevant goes totally against the notion of editing on quality. So my site suddenly would become better if it switched from free ISP webspace to its own domain?

I have lots of ODP listings for pages that go not have their own domain name.

I should point out that the reverse also applies. For example, the ODP does not generally list "product purchase" pages in the Shopping/ hierarchy that are deeplinks of an online catalog or which are otherwise easily accessible from some primary home page. So if www.buywidgets.com has a listing in Shopping/Widgets, www.buywidgets.com/red/model9876.html will not be listed in Shopping/Widgets/Red . Simply establishing a domain and changing the url of that page to www.redwidget19876.com or red19876.buywidgets.com doesn't change the fundamental fact that it is a product page and subsidiary to www.buywidgets.com, so it will be denied a separate listing.
