Becoming a DMOZ editor for small category.

How much commitment?

I have read over the guidelines twice and both times decided it was too intimidating. The category I want to edit is very specific and has only five links in it -- including my own hobby site.

I'm very dedicated to my site and wouldn't mind spending some time each week to work on the DMOZ category since I look for links to add to my site anyway. Is it really as intense and complicated as the application makes it seem, re: site selection criteria, editing guidelines, dealing with spam, working with other editors? How much time can I expect to spend working on such a small category? How often am I expected to add new links?

Hello Finder, welcome to WebmasterWorld. Are you a Mac user? Wondering about your handle (the Mac "Finder" etc.)

First, you might want to read the second post here:
[webmasterworld.com...]

Usually the surest way to become an editor is to begin in a Regional category at a low level. Your preferred category might be small, but if it's not way low in the heirarchy, you might well be rejected at the outset. The training ground at ODP is in the Regional subcats.

The basic criteria of preparing a few reviews to submit with your application stands, no matter the size of the category. Don't be overwhelmed by all the stuff that you read in the Guidelines. First and foremost, prepare some sample reviews and submit your application. Be honest about your involvement in whatever your field of interest is, if any; it won't be held against you.

Put in as much time on it as you want, each editor sets his or her own pace. I don't know there is any requirement to add X-number of links to the directory in any given amount of time, but I do know that ODP automatically cancels editor accounts if they are inactive for 90 days (meaning you haven't logged into the system.)

Go for it, good luck! :)

Actually, it's an old MUD handle. The first time I saw a Mac up close, though, I said, "Look! It's me!" ;)

Thanks for the welcome and the link to that earlier post. Helpful and friendly at the same time.
