Pay a Portal that uses DMOZ data to remain listed?

Just got spam (4 copies)from a .us portal that uses DMOZ data, asking for $50 a DAY to continue the listing, and receive the traffic from them. WHAT A JOKE!

Total scam. Use DMOZ data, then email all listed sites telling them to pay up to continue.

Is this not in violation of DMOZ data usage rules?

I would think it is since they dont make money off of it, just think of the people who fell for it. I bet they have made some money off of this already. I am also sure they will cover any costs they had to get the list and set up the directory before DMOZ could shut them down.

Where does the ODP license say that a data user can't make money off their copy of the directory? If they display the correct attribution, then they have fulfilled their part of the contract.

My bet actually is that they will make very little money like this. Their chances would be much better asking for $50 a month instead of a day. Those people who can afford this per day probably also can afford someone to do the ROI calculation for them... ;)

Of course at $50/day they wouldn't need too many people to actually take them up on it, so that's probably their idea. But I'd say you're right.

In fact if it's the one I saw recently -- the one that recently changed their domain name from a .com to the current .us -- try to sign up. The link won't work... and apparently they haven't noticed a drastic drop in their sign up rate yet. :)
