how do you edit my.cnf with Mac's Terminal?

I'm trying to edit my.cnf via Mac's Terminal but it won't let me save it.
After logging in as root at prompt, i wrote:
vi /etc/my.cnf
and tried to change my 'max connections' but it won't let me save it. I just don't know what to do. Please help.

I figured it out. To all mac users out there..
To save:
Press ESC a few times then type :w and then Enter.
