Mysql "rows in set" result lower than actual

[never mind...was basing this on the auto_increment photo id number and didn't take into account the fact that we had deleted some over the years. Just getting a washcloth to take the egg off my face. :-) ]

While working on a database of photos that has just climbed to 10,018 entries, I looked at the table in both phpmyadmin and via command line and noticed that the result for a select * from photos said:

9990 rows in set (0.03 sec)

Why would the numbers be off? Is it just a lag in reporting?
