Problems connecting to database

Using sunshop and database connection is timing out

I have sunshop 3.5.1 installed on a godaddy linux shared server. It's been working fine for over a year until a couple of weeks ago. I'm getting this error when I try to check out:

Database Error In SunShop 3.5.1: Invalid SQL: SELECT * FROM items where itemid='122'

MySQL Error: Lost connection to MySQL server during query

MySQL Error Number: 2013

I haven't changed anything recently. I talked to godaddy and they are telling me that something is messed up with the permissions, so they reset all the permissions to 705. The permissions wouldn't have anything to do with the database timing out/disconnecting would it? So I don't know what to do. I thought I would ask here first before reinstalling the cart. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem?
