Type of database required

Large networking site

I'm fairly new to databases and was wondering what kind if database would be required for a fairly large networking site, sort of like myspace - but not quite as large.

Basically I need a database that can support a few million profiles, each with a semi-webpage kind of feel. Lots of data.

Is this something mysql can handle? Would I have to step it up on the type of db? I don't even want to imagine what kind of hosting I'm going to have to find. But the database info would be helpful at the moment if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks for the link. I missed the beginning of the conversation because the link from the original thread doesn't work anymore.. but I got the jist of the post. Looks like MySQL can handle what I'm trying to do.
