I am a MSSQL kinda guy and have really only used that. However I want to install a couple of bits to mess around with (MovableType etc) and need to install a MySQL database. It will be on the same machine as the MSSQL but they use different ports etc and I understand can work OK together.

Looking at MySQL there appears a beta version of 5.1 with prob all the usual risks that come with a beta. However as what I am doing really isn't mission critical, couple of personal blogs etc. Would you recommend installing that one, would it be worth messing around with the latest version and do any of the new features justify using it.

As a general rule I'd say if you're trying a piece of software for the first time the newest beta probably isn't the best starting point.
Also, there are compatibility issues between many programs and the MySQL version so you should check what version the apps you're wanting to use are compatible with. You might even want to start with a stable version of 4...
