You guys running Mysql or sql based forums.

How large are your databases? How many messages in there? How much space does one msg take?

Using phpBB, just over 151,000 posts: the
phpbb_posts
table stands at 10,5Mb and
phpbb_posts_text
stands at 57.9Mb.

The biggest bulk of the database is actually

phpbb_search_wordmatch
table for the search function rather than the posts themselves.

Interesting question.

Size of 2 of my 6 forums (all phpBB and MySQL):

(1) 6 months old

66 members

291 posts

Size 2 MB

(2) 1 month old

55 members

216 posts

Size 0.4 MB

I started late in having my own forums at my sites. Silly me. In the past I relied on Everyone.net's free forum. A very very big mistake on my part because I don't own the database. :C Lesson learned: Never rely on third party free content.

I always wanted to know the size of big forums such as this one or the infamous US$10 million movie forum such as Rotten Tomatoes.

I notice that WebmasterWorld changed hosting provider recently i.e. from Westhost to Rackspace.

What is the best solution in transfering a very big database from one host to another?

I know that it is not a problem to backup remotely when your database is small. But what if your database is in GB? How do you do it remotely? Because if I have to do it remotely at home it will take ages.

How do you guys at Webmasterworld backup your database? Do you do it remotely or do you have to pay the hosting company to manage the backup?

Do you have the backup copy of the Webmasterworld at home?

I am involved with more than half a dozen forums,

one with invision which is over 10 mb of mysql, the admin is cool and helps me maintain it withour much alteration.

Rest are with phpbb ranging from 2 mbs to over 75 mbs as I have some additional data for the forums. All are mysql based.
