I've read quite a few posts on how to start a forum. Now, I'm curious as to whether forum posting services actually work? Do any of you know of any good forum posting services?

Thanks in advance

We can't name names here for commercial services. There are certainly some firms out there that will do that kind of work - I'd say a lot depends on the nature of your forum and how specialized its topic is.

I'd ask firms you speak with who will be doing the posting and get some client references. Having posts of reasonable quality is important, and that's a subjective judgment. A bunch of "me too" posts or posts that don't make sense in the context of the forum won't help much.

You might be able to solicit help from freelance sites, too. As always, look for a long and excellent history of completed projects of the scale you anticipate.

Can someone explain why a site owner wouldn't just seed a new or faltering forum with a few posts of his own?

If it's a few posts, jsinger, the DIY approach is no problem. If you are looking for high daily totals, though, it can be outsourced - just like content writing, coding, graphic design, & other stuff some site owners do themselves but others prefer to hire out. And, as with those other activities, results may vary.
