Upgrading to vb 3.5

Is it worth doing for a heavily customized 3.0 board?

I have a vb 3.0 forum that has been pretty heavily integrated into my site. So it has been customized as well as some other parts of the site that are tailored around the vb 3.0 code.

I'm debating on whether or not it is worth it to upgrade to 3.5. Increased performace, (query/code optimization) would be worthwhile to me and I'd probably take the time to do it.

Does anybody here have any experience with both versions? How does the performance compare? I've heard of the new system "hooks" to make for easier add-ons, is that system ready for prime-time? What other features/improvements are there that make it a worthwhile upgrade?

thx for comments,

We're running a far less customized version of vb but went with the upgrade. A few little improvements, but overall a direct conversion didn't yield anything much in the way of noticeable improvements or benefits.

The hooks feature isn't a big deal yet, it's more IMO for future expandability. I think in the future it'll help with folks such as yourself with heavy customizations, making the upgrade paths easier.

The reason we upgraded is for security. Forums are too popular of a target not to stay current.

Security is a good point and a good reason for me to start looking over the 3.5 code and see what I have ahead of me. Right now I think they are keeping both 3.0 & 3.5 updated for security, but at some point they'll stop maintaining 3.0. Who knows maybe those hooks will make my life easier in the future. ;)

I agree about the future, wheel. A lot of the mods available for 3.5 appear to be ports of hacks created for 3.0 and earlier versions. As the 3.5 code is out there for a while, I think we can expect some new plugins that offer expanded functionality with ease of updating.
