Suggested forum script

What is your favorite and why?

Hey there,
After reviewing the ABC of forum building, I have decided to look for another script besides phpBB as it appears to be too intense for some not so internet savvy surfers...

I had a very educated person who loved the idea of the site and the chance to mingle and discuss things but she was so intimidated by the discussion forum that she never posted...she seems typical of my target audience

WHat discussion forum script (like WW here) would you suggest that is stripped of all the bells and whistles?

And have you had any luck adding portal like features like link directories?

I've been looking at forum scripts for awhile.

Any one of the many scripts can be stripped down to its basics. You don't have to run all the bells and whistles, or add mods.

I agree with WebWork and would go further to say that pretty much any forum software you choose will probably need to be tweaked anyway to suit your site.

Any software which comes with code can be adjusted. Most of the bells and whistles can (and probably should) be removed. Almost all of them need to be tweaked for performance.

As a tip if you use phpbb - there is a mod called fetch all that is great for what you describe.

I am using phpBB and am most comfortable with that. So, I guess I will try to strip it down to WW'esque :)

limbo, what is that mod you referred to? FETCH? what does it do?

And has anyone had success adding partal style additions like link directories?

A really simple yet powerful forums I use is punbb (punbb.org) it's not overloaded with useless features yet it is also easy to add mods if needed and easy to intregrate a site into the forums to use the same login, and database.

i'll add another vote for punbb.

I'll vote for Yabb. It needs no external software, except Perl (which is usually available anyway), and with version 2.0 is very easy to change the appearance through a single CSS file and any number of HTML templates you want.
