I have been running a dating script modified as a social network for a few years now, and let me tell you most folks don't use half of the installed scripts. A recent poll on my site indicates that their favorite part of the site is the forum, yet we have tons of other stuff to do.

I have learned the hard way by spending a lot of money on features that people do not use. I naturally assumed that because the site somewhat mimics facebook and myspace and other social scripts, folks would be familiar with all the features. Well I was wrong. It's not features they want its good content they desire, answers to their questions,. They have a problem and they want you to solve it. Thats why they join. All the bells and whistles dont mean a thing if you can't provide information they need.

My sites are stagnating, I had considered closing them down, but what the heck, I'll see how they do.

I want to share my knowledge and experience with others of what works and what doesnt now. Am I an expert, no way. But I have learned a lot about social scripts and what people really want in a forum.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld Scooty.

I think anyone who has run a community would say the same. I'm always amazed at all the functionality my users don't take advantage of.

I am not really sure about the most usage of forums part on social networking sites. Facebook and myspace do not have forums. Well, myspace does, but not facebook. Other dating sites have popular forums, and do not have traffic on services section of the website. It is mostly the interest of people what they like to do on a site. You have to make it interesting enough to have them stick around.

Hey Scooty! You use PhpFox? Seen the name on their forums before...

Well I still use phpfox for a LOCAL CITY social website and its still growing.. For the whole 2 years my forum area has been disabled. To me that pushes blogs, bulletins, etc.

And yes I have made a strong custom push towards being MORE LIKE facebook with status's, comments etc and it seems to be working.

Don't reinvent the wheel here was my motto, set it up SIMILAR to myspace/facebook so they know how to use it..
