phpbb search engine spider mod

I tried and tried... no errors, until you click any link, you get a 404 with the new html page its trying to access.

I've followed the instructions and everything but I think i'm doing something fundementally wrong maybe... I'm confused as you can probably tell.

What have I done wrong?

...and now ive uploaded my backup, and blank htaccess files and it doesn't work still.
