Nokia Acquires Social Networkling Site, Plazes [nytimes.com]
The world's top cellphone maker Nokia said on Monday it has agreed to buy social networking start-up Plazes as part of its major push into offering Internet services.

Plazes provides location-aware services that people can use to plan, record, and share their social activities.

Nokia did not disclose the value of the deal.

>>location-aware services

That's certainly the key piece. Phone companies need to find alternate business models. The idea of free phones supported by ads is hardly far fetched, and the most valuable ads will be location-dependent.

Interesting, indeed - and perfectly understandable in the light of Nokia being the market leader in mobile phone / GPS linked technologies (eg friend finders, navigators, mobile travel guides, etc.). Smart move, something to keep an eye on.
