MySpace launched Monday a "free," mobile version of its Web site accessible to anyone with a standard Web-enabled cellphone. Nothing is truly free, however: MySpace serves up ads to pay for the service. The new site loads two ads--one banner and one text snippet--for each visitor. News Corp. can no longer afford to watch idly as other publishers snap up what one research firm estimates could be $1.4 billion spent to buy mobile ads next year. Fox Interactive plans to launch other mobile sites soon, including FoxSports.com and game network IGN.
