MySpace launched Monday a "free," mobile version of its Web site accessible to anyone with a standard Web-enabled cellphone. Nothing is truly free, however: MySpace serves up ads to pay for the service.

The new site loads two ads--one banner and one text snippet--for each visitor. News Corp. can no longer afford to watch idly as other publishers snap up what one research firm estimates could be $1.4 billion spent to buy mobile ads next year. Fox Interactive plans to launch other mobile sites soon, including FoxSports.com and game network IGN.

This makes the MySpace purchase look like an even bigger bargain (if they can hold out against the Facebook onslaught).
