In most competitive industries, I don't see blogs ranking very well.
So, with respect to rankings and SEO in general, the value of a blog is ____?

In a very competitive area, getting any kind of new site to rank is going to be time consuming and/or expensive. A blog, at least, should generate some traffic from blog searches, and, if it's well done, may attract links more quickly than a static site.
