The old thread I started is closed now because it's too old, so I thought I would update you.

Well, since the last google TBPR update vbulletin (with vbSEO mod) seems to be able to handle passing PR better. Also, the linkback system is great too.

I have found so far, comparing the two side by side on two active boards that vBulletin is superior to phpbb. Of course, this is ONLY my opinion, but here is why I feel this way:

1. Users seem to like it better.
2. Easier to mod.
3. Passes PR to other pages better.
4. Appears in serps better.

Anyway, that's my opinion after kickin' vbulletin's tires pretty good. I would not start another board without it. Even though it is not free like phpbb, it certainly is worth the chump change for such a fine product. :)

Thanks for the update, MThiessen.

For the PR passing, do you think it's because of better link structuring, or are the "static" URLs showing toolbar PR where the dynamic URLs didn't?

What about fighting viagra spammers?

I have more than a dozen phpbb forums and I have to waste my time a few times per day deleting these stupid blogspot viagra spams. I feel like slapping these spammmers.

Actually, I could stop some of them from posting by requiring user confirmation but that will not stop them from signing up. Since I only want genuine members at my forums, I have no choice but to allow them to continue to spam my forums and manually delete their usernames.

I searched for their usernames and found that mostly sites using phpbb are spammed. I can't blame phpbb because probably these spammers are targetting phpbb boards.
