Recently, i added an easy bot stopper which stopped nearly all bots for a while. Now I'm getting some that are getting around the mod and these are particularly nasty ones since they are not just leaving one post, but dozens of pron posts in the different topics. So far though, they have all been from 8* IP adresses. I used to block any 8* adresses from the entire site via htaccess, but as the site became larger I decided that was a bit extreme. Now they just can't sign up in the forums.

Anyone have any experience with this? Anyone in the western US see any value to traffic from that range?

Well, i don't think it will hurt. I just went through about 50 recent posts from different members, checking IP's, and none fell within that range.

50 posts isn't a very big sample. You might try scanning through your entire user database and see if any legit users registered or posted with an IP in the range you are tracking.

Actually, i did, but I was waiting for someone else to post cause i didn't want to have three posts in a row. I have found some legit UK visitors from that range of IPs. OTOH, I haven't had a single spam post since making the change.

Minor note: I think you really want to block the range 80.0.0.0-89.255.255.255, not just 80.0.0.0-89.0.0.0.

Yes , thats correct, but I don't really see any violators over the 83 block
