better forum software

xmb,smf,phpBB etc

i've used XMB few years back then shifted to invision but they became paid s/w and had to switch to SMF

now SMF doesnt seem to have many flexible features and the way they're going, i doubt they'll end up like invision board.

so how many people recommend XMB or phpBB?
also how to convert SMF 1.0.8 to XMB or phpBB?
