I would like to know if anyone has any recommendations or positive & negative experience with web design companies that do community style websites (more interactive "web 2.0" like).

We can't do specific recommendations or comments on particular designers, but the usual cautions apply. Be sure to check out other sites the firm has done, and clearly understand their role in the site. Community sites are less about initial design (though that's still important) and more about continuous management.
