Hi,
I am considering a portal solution for a community that I will build for a client. But I don't know much about the different offerings.

I would like to hear your opinion on PHPNuke and PostNuke. I would like to compare their features, security issues, more add-ons (hack, mods), etc...

Would you suggest any other solution besides these two? Should I stick with open source or look also at commercial solutions?

Thanks a lot for your opinions.

Can't opinionate on stuff I've not used! I haven't ever had any real reason to go to that sort of "doorway" for my fora. The people who use my fora don't care about all the other stuff you see on portals.... it's just more things to "break" after all.

If you do use 3rd party portalware like those you mention, be aware that you won't be able to get support from the phpBB forum....

I haven't used either, skuba. At one point there were some major security issues with PHPNuke, but I'd guess those have been resolved.

When comparing software, one good practice is to visit the support forum for each product. I'd look for a good level of activity (but not TOO many problem report posts), quick response time to questions, and a diverse group of knowlegeable contributors. A healthy user community is one indication that the product is good and that if you do run into issues you'll be able to get help.

Once upon a time PHPNuke was very insecure, I don't know if their practices have improved.

I don't like most portals on usability grounds, though.
