New topic on thread page?

Hi all

Just wondered if I might get a few opinions on this...

We run a phpBB forum which gets quite a few inexperienced forum users. A common problem is people hitting 'New Post' and so staring a new thread when they really meant to reply to a thread.

I am thinking about taking the 'New post' button off the thread page entirely and only leaving the option to Reply.

My thinking is that no-one really starts a new thread from a thread page anyway - the logical place to do it is from the forum page. Or not?

Maybe you should try changing the name on the buttons to be more clear. 'New Post' does not necessarily tell me if I'm making a new post on the current thread or creating a new thread. Try something like 'Post new topic' and 'Post reply'.

Sure why not. We have it that way for years now, never had any complaints. It's the inconvenience of threads in the wrong forum against the inconvenience of needing to click once more to make a new thread.
I choose the latter.

I don't think it would hurt to eliminate the "New Post" button on the thread display pages; rewording might cut the problem too.

Personally, I usually post from the forum display page since it allows me to scan what's been posted lately and avoid redundancy. Give it a try and see if anyone complains.
