I have a blog site and it is still quite new, and because I have little time to update it, I am thinking about having some people do guest blogging on my blog to maybe help it get better search engine rankings. Would it be a good thing or bad for SEO?

Would it be a good thing or bad for SEO?
Depends on what they write. You want rich content and articles that qualify as informational and authoritative. If these "guests" can write that level of content, it may be good for SEO.

You also want to be topic specific. Keep your guest's posts related to a central topic, an overall contextual theme.

A more important question may be security. Opening the gate and letting anyone post is potentially troublesome and requires monitoring. However, you could always create a queue where new posts are automatically held until you OK them.

Back in 2013, when Matt Cutts was offering tips and ideas, he said that guest blogging was not on the list of good ideas: Guest Blogging and Google [webmasterworld.com]

A few weeks later there was more info: Matt Cutts: Guest Blogging for SEO is Over [webmasterworld.com]

I haven't seen anything in the years since then that would look like it's a good idea now.

I feel that I need to modify my response because guest blogging in itself is not uncommon and not always a bad thing on established blogs. The question of whether it would help SEO of a young blog is where my original response came from. As keyplyr says, "Depends on what they write".

If your site is doing well on its own merits you may be approached by authority writers in your niche who might ask to contribute an article they see as relevant for your audience. A few new relevant guest articles for an established site is not the same as arranging for people to post content in hopes it will elevate your site's value.

Content is the key (some say king) to user satisfaction. Forget SEO, concentrate on the user. If that means a few articles by contributors is good for the user, then fine, but I wouldn't hand the contributor(s) the keys to the server to do the posting, nor would I give up editorial control over the content presented on MY site ... after all, I am the one who will suffer any consequences.

Thank you all for your replies. I guess I would just have to filter out the blogs first and choose what to publish. And yeah, since my blog is still young, I'll just concentrate with the content for now.

Content is always a king in SEO. You need to update specifically topics on which people's can write blogs and articles. Your website is new, so you should approve only high-quality and unique content. If the "guests" can write that level of content, it will be good for SEO.

I see lots of guest blogging in the travel blogs. Not sure how I feel about it. I was sort of blown away by how incestual it appeared. I've seen facebook/g+ and other groups established just to do guest blogs and link trades and such. Myself, I wish it would die a quick death as it isn't really good for the industry - it really turns it into a massive pyramid scheme wherein a lot of blogs you pay to play.. yes.. you pay someone to post something you wrote about.

I say its "bad" because it distracts one from writing, forces you to create content for other blogs in hopes of driving traffic and in the end its just a giant game to get links and now you have to remember to check that your posts aren't deleted or the site switched to nofollow or you found out they sent it out on the wire and now its syndicated content with no references and no links..

an entire cottage industry grew around this concept.

Quality Guest Blogging is good for SEO. Guest blogging must be for the sake of users not for the backlinks. In any way, I don't know how guest blogging can be a bad idea? Well, In my opinion, SEO itself is a black-hat technique.

If you're on the top of the pyramid guest blogging is great... If you're on the bottom guest blogging sucks. Most people know guest blogging is all about the links. They're not optimized for referrals by any stretch of the imagination.

Guest posting can improve traffic for the owner of the website who allows the guest posts and also helpful for the poster who wants the backlink from that site. But it is essential to use unique content and seo friendly content.

This thread feels very spammy to me!

all the same ...

what is meant by guest blogging?

do you mean getting another person to write a blog post either for payment or for payment in kind (eg a backlink or two) ...

if so, then realistically, anyone who is well known or has good knowledge in the niche/field is not going to be interested in writing an article or blog post for a new website ... certainly not for a couple of backlinks and not for a trivial cash payment.

as an example, i am well known in a couple of small niches ... i would laugh in the face of someone who offerered me a couple of backlinks in exchange for an article/post in my fields of expertise. A well written post/article by a known and informed person would be minimum $500 and considerably more for anything substantial. (in my experience)

getting a true expert to write on your blog is worth while, but getting some idiot to (badly) paraphrase a wikipedia article is a waste of time.

Guest blogging is very top notch method in seo for making backlinks. But here message should be clear for the audience, if audience cant understand the main of the article then guest wont be fruitful, otherwise for ranking a site this very nice method.

Yes, this thread seems to only be perpetrating the idea that guest blogging is a good thing. Since Google's official spokesperson at that time, Matt Cutts stated clearly back in 2014 [webmasterworld.com] that this is not a good idea. Not then, not now.

Rather than mislead people, we are closing it with this advice:

There are lots of myths over guest blog posting, and many years ago it used to be a good way to gain traction, particularly with regards to SEO however, that ship has long since sailed.
The vast majority of bloggers know that guest posting's best days are over mainly through abuse and spamming, so the practice doesn't carry the weight it did in its heyday. Most good bloggers don't entertain the idea, and if they do, they use nofollow, as recommended by the excellent detail from Matt Cutts. It's worth anyone considering guest blog posting to read and understand those wise words to learn what works and what doesn't.
