I have had a hotel website that has been very successful in the US. Recently, my client has opened a hotel in Japan and wants the same type of results there as he is getting here. He wants me to focus on Yahoo. He does have a new .co.jp URL. I have made modifications to Titles and Metas and content is quality, however, he is still struggling. Any suggestions on how to handle Yahoo Japan? Thanks.

Sorry if this seems like a silly question, but is the conent in Japanese?

Generally speaking, basic ranking factors and SEO techniques also apply to Yahoo Japan. However, they are still using the directory first system, so you may want to consider that.

My own experience is mixed, some sites rank well using basic SEO, some rank poorly, with no apparent reasoning... For example, for one keyword, a competitors site without the keyword in the title, or content is ranked #1, while mine which about 4 months ago was #1 has dropped to the 70's.
While for other keywords and content, the same site (different pages) ranks well.

Thanks for responding. The site is in Japanese. I am going to attempt to get the site listed in Yahoo Japan directory which I believe should help. Do you know if Yahoo Japan will accept a URL such as...

www.myurl.com/tokyo

Our site has hotels from numerous cities around the world. Each one has a home page in the above format.

Yep, subdirectories are accepted. Its really the directory thats important, and ultimately its yahoo that decides where it goes and if it shows up in the search- try to get your keywords in the description- this may help.

I got stuck in a commercial directory which gives me no trafic, whereas some competitors (although also commercial) are listed in the public section, which is listed 1st for my main keyword- thereby giving them great results.
