Does anyone know of a bank in Japan that cashes cheques with a minimal charge?

I once cashed a Western Union cheque at Tokyo-Mitsubishi and it cost something like 5000 yen.

I'd recommend getting a citibank in your home country ($0 fees in the US) where you'd have the check deposited. Then you can withdraw it at any citibank ATM worldwide, in the local currency, without any fees beyond the exchange rate.

Try Suruga bank. They have a branch in Otemachi, I believe or the best is to go to Western Union site and look for country Japan and then look for the local suruga bank near you. I think they are the WU rep bank here and they dont charge anything........

Thanks for the messages. Actually, I have been cashing my affiliate cheques in my home country. I know that cheques are very foreign in Japan, I was just wondering what everyone else does.

When I tried to cash my western union cheque a couple of years ago, I couldn't do even do it at the WU office! They only help people send and receive money. I even opened a Suruga bank account because they were linked to Suruga, but again they don't cash cheques.

If my affiliate income grows I don't want to be sending the cheques home. If I can't cash them easily in Japan, I have been thinking about setting up an offshore account.

Any recommendations?

You can use services like link sense or get2cash. A lots of people in Japan use their services for their AdSense checks.
