re: [webmasterworld.com...]

I'm seeing Chinese character domains with the .com extension in the Google SERPs. Anyone have any idea how I can register one?

Don't get to venture out this way much. ;-)

I haven't heard that this is globally accessible yet. VeriSign has one way of resolving what they call Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), but China was working on their own name resolution system. If you're seeing .com names with Chinese then it's probably someone using the VeriSign system. which requires the use of the i-Nav plug-in.

The VeriSign site has a section on Internationalized Domain Names [verisign.com] that explains the system and lists registrars supporting it.

Just keep in mind that the Chinese government and CNNIC haven't shown support for this system (at least I can't find anything on it). The last I heard was that they were going their own way, so the solution for local language domain names is still splintered.

I hate to disagree with the expert, but I'm using Opera 8 preview and a new install of IE6. :) I'm not crazy, I swear...

This is live without any plugins. In Google and everything.

IDN

Thanks for that list, I'll try it out.

Well, there was talk of adding server plug-ins that would help in the resolution of these names...but I think that would have to be more of a global DNS solution. I haven't read that anything new has been done in respect to IDNs in a while.

it's not popular for web sites like www.chinese characters.com. you can find some domain name registration distributors to do it.

Cheers redstorm, glad you chimed in.

I know it's not popular, that's why I was asking about it. It's the first time I'd ever seen it.
